DSWD appeals to stop illicit practices of adoption

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Feb 2 (PIA) – Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD IX) continues to monitor illicit or unlawful practices of adoption as they emphasize the importance of legal adoption process.

Gladys Jacalan Morados, social welfare officer of DSWD IX reported that there are still cases of independent adoption or direct placement of a child with no license or authority to take care of a child. In this situation, DSWD cannot monitor the capability of the parents in taking care of a child.

“A child is not a commodity, we have a law pertaining to adoption on how to protect the welfare of every child. Let us go through proper process of adoption,” Morados emphasized.

Another case of unlawful adoption is the simulation of birth records to make it appear that a child is born to a person who is not his biological mother causing a child to lose their identity.

“It is important to provide the successional rights of a child, and through DSWD we can also monitor the progress and development of a child after the adoption,” Morados added.

DSWD IX have alternative parental care program, foster care program which offers professional service to ensure the child’s welfare and family life restored. Foster care is a substitute parental care, or temporary placement for a child before reuniting with biological family or to provide the child for permanent placement.

In 2021, DSWD recorded a total of 16 successful legal adoption in Region IX and for the month of February they are inviting all couples and parents who are interested in adopting a child, they can visit the DSWD adoption help desk at SM City Mindpro Zamboanga City on February 14 to 16, 2022.
