BFP kicks off Fire Prevention Month in CAR

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) -- The Bureau of Fire Protection – Cordillera continues to remind the public to ensure the prevention of fire incidents with the start of the month-long Fire Prevention Month campaign.

“Ang Fire Prevention Month ngayong March ay para maging aware ang ating mga kababayan sa fire incidents and prevention despite the fact that we are still in the COVID-19 pandemic,” BFP-CAR Community Relations Section Head SFO1 Leo Mendoza said in an interview.

Mendoza said that thru the observance of Fire Prevention Month, the BFP hopes to reduce the fire incidents by eight percent. He clarified though that  not only every March  that  the firemen and firewomen are regularly and constantly reminding the public of the fire prevention and fire safety to ensure that fire incidents would be avoided.

“Hindi lang tuwing March pero araw araw, hindi po napapagod ang inyong mga kabumberohan na nagpapa-alala para ma lessen po natin ang fire incident and cases natin,” he added.

This year, the BFP is conducting Community Centered Fire Safety Focus where fire officers in the station levels conduct routine inspection of establishments, government and private buildings and other infrastructures to ensure safety of the buildings not only against fire but also against other possible disasters.

He said that the BFP-CAR thru the various fire stations regionwide, is intensifying the conduct of information education and communication campaigns and strategies to reach out to the communities to ensure that they prevent and stop fire incidents especially in areas with frequent grass, forest and garbage fires.

The BFP will also conduct seminars and trainings under the new normal, fire safety and disaster management seminars, firefighting, fire drill and earthquake drills.

The second week of March is designated as BFP Community Relations Week that focuses on strengthening the relationship of the bureau to the community through various activities including fire simulation exercises

Meanwhile, BFP-CAR Fire Safety and Enforcement Division and Public Information Unit Head Senior Inspector Jesus Yango reported that there was a significant decrease of fire incidents recorded by the BFP in 2021 with 301 cases compared to the 391 in 2020. Most of the cases were forest or grass fires in the province of Benguet

Most common causes of fires were electrical connections due to overloading, children playing with matches and lighters, unattended cooking and unattended candles and lamps.

The BFP-CAR with the other stakeholders and partners and the local government units kicked off the Fire Prevention Month observance thru a motorcade and sounding of the sirens in the different cities, municipalities and provinces in the Cordillera region  last March 1.

With the theme, “Sa Pag-iwas sa Sunog Hindi Ka Nag-iisa”,  it aims to remind the public that fire prevention is not the sole responsibility of the BFP but a shared responsibility.

The month of March was declared as “Fire Prevention Month” by virtue of Proclamation No. 115-A. (JDP/RMC- PIA-CAR) (BFP-CAR photos
