Iconic Baguio Cathedral Pilgrim Stairs inaugurated

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) -- The iconic Baguio Cathedral Pilgrim's Stairs was inaugurated with its new look - without the canopies exposing the original Neo Romanesque architectural design of the church.

Diocese of Baguio Bishop Victor Bendico led the inauguration of the renovated access stairs from Session Road going up to the Catheral and blessing of statues Monday evening (March 7) with Mayor Benjamin Magalong as guest of honor.

Baguio Cathedral of Our Lady of Atonement Rector, Rev. Fr. Juvelarde Cabading, said   the restoration and some innovations were inspired by the opening of Jubilee Door at  the Baguio Cathedral.

"If the opening of the Jubilee Door of the Baguio Cathedral marked the Baguio Cathedral as pilgrimage church during this 500th anniversary of Christianity in the Philippines, the refurbishment of this Cathedral stairs leaves a legacy for it. Definitely, the celebration of the 500th anniversary of Christianity in the Philippines will conclude soon but pilgrims and our local faithful continue their visits to the Baguio Cathedral," Fr. Cabading said.

He said that statues of angels and saints were installed to remind the pilgrims that they are in company of angels and saints wherever they are.  The ornamental plants   along the stairs are part of the advocacy of the Diocese which is to care for the environment.

Meanwhile, Tagalong said that the Cathedral and its historic stairs   is one of the destinations tourists can visit as the city transitions to the new normal and moves towards recovery.

"Baguio Cathedral has been through to the test of time and has seen Baguio grow, struggle and conquer any challenges thrown at her. May this pilgrims stairs stand as a reminder of how we can bring back the Baguio that is all familiar to all of us," Magalong stated. (JDP/DEG-PIA CAR)
