122 rice farmers complete rice farming training

NEGROS OCCIDENTAL (PIA) –- A total of 122 rice farmers from barangays Codcod and Quezon in San Carlos City completed the four-month training School-On-Air Smart Rice Agriculture Program (SOA-SRA).

The Department of Agriculture- Agricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI) and Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), in coordination with San Carlos City Agriculture’s Office, held a completion ceremony for the beneficiaries of the SOA-SRA where these farmers received certificates, assorted vegetables and rice seeds subsidy during the ceremony.

The training program centered on the principles and practices related to rice production such as the smart-technologies on soil analysis, wetting and drying alternatives, use of leaf color charts, test kits, climate change adaptation, chemical calculation as well as the palay check system to boost production.

Senior Agriculture Provincial Seed Coordinator Dr. Mary Anne C. Ordinario, said the program will help farmers grow their products effectively thru smart-innovative techniques to increase rice production.

 ”It is crucial for them to apply what they have learned to become self-sufficient in any circumstances especially during pandemic, Ordinario said.

Myrna S. Tormes, SOA-SRA outstanding farmer of Barangay Quezon said she is thankful to the program where she was able to effectively apply what she learned on her own rice fields, which used to yield low, but have been productive, increasing her yield from 45 kilos to 55 kilos per sack.
