DICT 9 eGovernment projects finalists for Int’l Award

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Mar 9 (PIA) – The Department of Information Communication and Technology 9 (DICT 9) e-government projects and services have recently been shortlisted for the 2022 World Summit on the Information Society Prizes.

“Our mandate for the remote and hard-to-reach communities under our care is to connect, connect, connect. While we faced seemingly insurmountable challenges in connecting far-flung islands, with partnership and teamwork we are glad that we made considerable progress,” said DICT 9 Regional Director Maria Teresa Camba.

These projects include Information Communication and Technology (ICT) and on connectivity of ‘Free Wifi for All’ in hard-to-reach and isolated communities in Western Mindanao which was nominated under the category of information and communication infrastructure.

This project was a response to the series of failed attempts in connecting remote islands in Mindanao due to geographical constraints. The broadband network maximizes existing systems to connect communities with no access to full-blown ICT infrastructure, such as Basilan; the largest and northern most island of Sulu Archipelago in South-West Philippines with more than 500,000 population. Moreover, DICT was also able to connect far-flung municipalities in Sulu and Tawi-tawi.

Delivering eGovernment Services through the Zamboanga City Government Network project was also nominated under e-Government category. This project has interconnected 116 government agencies in Zamboanga City, where the fiber optic network was most needed as government transactions shifted online due to the pandemic.

“We will continue to ensure that all municipalities in our area will be provided with ICT-enabled opportunities. Being recognized globally is just a bonus,” Dir. Camba said.

Only 360 projects were shortlisted for the voting period including these 2 entries from the Philippines. This global contest was developed to create a platform to recognize projects and activities that leverage the power of ICTs to advance sustainable development.

Region 9 can support these nominated projects by creating an account and voting online until March 31, 2022 at https://www.itu.int/net4/wsis/stocktaking/Prizes/2022/Vote.
