DA chief: Strengthen quarantine protocols vs. bird flu

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- Agriculture Secretary William Dar underscored the need to boost strategic quarantine procedures on the entry of poultry products in Visayas as safety measures against avian influenza.

“We continue to strengthen our quarantine protocols. Dapat may papeles
kung ano 'yung paggalaw ng mga poultry products including the eggs like that kung saan nanggaling na farm. There should be some sort of traceability,” Dar emphasized in a recent press conference at DA-Western Visayas Integrated Agricultural Research Center (WESVIARC).

The top agriculture chief made this call amid the threat of bird flu in the country.

Local government units were also urged to be vigilant and work closely with the Department of Health (DOH), DA’s attached agencies, and stakeholders to ensure that biosecurity and disease control methods are implemented.

DA further said that it has issued Memorandum Circular No. 5 highlighting the guidelines on the local movement of domestic and wild
birds and poultry products and by-products during the avian influenza surveillance period.

This policy regulates the movement of ducks, quails, chicken, and other poultry products in affected areas, particularly those coming
from within the one-kilometer quarantine area.

“We will continue to elevate our monitoring and surveillance and really control doon sa may reported na mayroon ng Avian influenza,”
Dar said.

Based on the report of DA, the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) has confirmed the first detection of avian influenza Type A Subtype H5N1 in duck farms in the towns of Baliuag, Bulacan and Candaba, Pampanga, and quail farms in Candaba and Mexico, in Pampanga province. (JBG/LML/PIA-Iloilo)
