NGCP assures power supply reliability during polls

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- “We have done what we can to ensure that the power supply will remain stable.”

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) made this strong statement to assure the reliability of the power supply in time
for the May 2022 National and Local Elections in a recent joint press conference with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) 6, Police Regional Office 6, and the 3rd Infantry Division of the Philippine Army.

Reagan Alcantara, Lead Specialist of NGCP’s Public Relations department, noted the intensified preparations made as early as the first quarter of this year.

These necessary measures included a standby transmission line and crew in selected strategic areas around Panay, conduct of thermal scanning on substations, and several line maintenance to correct defects such as replacement of tools and insulators.

The NGCP also advised power distributors and cooperatives to avoid power outages during elections as this is a “critical time” unless, otherwise, in extreme emergency cases.

For his part, Lazaro Dela Cruz Jr., Chief of Visayas Operations and Maintenance, announced the heightened red alert period for NGCP
beginning May 6 to 11.

“On that period, our substation facilities, naka-double manning kami. We have two engineers on different duty shifts with a quick response on specific strategic locations,” de la Cruz said.

The NGCP also appealed to the public for efficient energy use to maximize the power transmission, especially this election.

Further, parents were advised to remind their children to refrain from flying kites or playing near the transmission line facilities for safety purposes. (JBG/LML/PIA Iloilo)
