Antique inks pact to establish bamboo plantation

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) – A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on the establishment of a communal bamboo plantation was signed by the Antique provincial government in a ceremony, May 4, at Sumakwel Hall, New Capitol Building, here.

The bamboo plantation is a joint project of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 6, Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region 6, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) and the Antique Sand and Gravel Quarry Permittees’ Association, Inc. (ASGQPAI).

The MOA was signed by Governor Rhodora Cadiao, DENR-6 Executive Director Livino Duran, MGB-6 Director Raul A. Laput, ASGQPAI President Julius Marcus Marfil, and AUFA President Medalyn Quimanhan.

The beneficiary of which is Alvaniz Upland Farmers’ Association (AUFA) from Barangay Alvaniz in Patnongon town where a 10-hectare area of land that is 14.5-kilometer away from the town center was identified as a suitable location for the project.

year, 2023, and over 70 members of the AUFA are expected to be provided livelihood upon the kick off of the operation.

The ASGQPAI will provide funding worth P455,976.50 for the project.

AUFA member Miame Grullo hopes that the turnout becomes successful for them to have a sustainable source of living and for them to receive more projects in the future.

The memorandum binds AUFA to maintain and protect planted bamboo cuttings to achieve at least 85% survival rate by the end of the three-year project implementation period.

Meanwhile, Duran said that the project will help in covering empty patches of land as part of their agency’s greening and reforestation initiatives.

He added that bamboo, although a type of grass, can be used as well in tree-planting activities.

Duran further noted that the island of Panay, with Antique’s contribution, has great potential in becoming the bamboo capital of the country.

For her part, Governor Cadiao expressed renewed optimism in the advantages of growing bamboo especially with their help in preventing floods, landslides, and their pivotal role in the handicrafts industry of the province. (AAL/BPS/PIA Antique)
