Guimaras’ Manggahan, Pearl Anniversary up this May

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The provincial government of Guimaras formally opened the celebration of the Manggahan Festival 2022 and its 30th provincehood anniversary.

In a recent press conference, Guimaras OIC Provincial Tourism Officer Liberty Ferrer said that to jumpstart the festivity, they opened on May 14 the Manggahan Agri-Trade Fair and the Mango-Eat-All-You-Can events.

“This is the new normal Manggahan Festival. After two years, we can now hold a physical event in the province of Guimaras. We have opened our Manggahan Agri-Trade Fair and the Mango-Eat-All-You-Can activities, but most of our highlights will be on May 20, 21, and 22, along with the celebration of the pearl anniversary of the province,” she added.

Ferrer also noted that the activities for Manggahan this year are a combination of physical and virtual events.

The island province of Guimaras is currently under Alert Level 1 based on the

latest issuance of the Inter-Agency Task Force, which is the basis of the organizers on holding the festivities.

The agri-trade fair, which aims to support the economic recovery of the province’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), is being held at the Provincial Capitol Grounds here and participated in by 50 exhibitors from various sectors like the agri-business, processed fruits and nuts, and the wearables and homestyle. This will run until May 22, 2022.

According to Provincial Economic Enterprise Development Officer Elena Quezon, the fair also includes more or less 20 metric tons of mangos being sold in various stalls.

“We’re slowly gaining our momentum and bouncing back in terms of our small and medium industries,” Quezon stressed, citing the recession the island province experienced from the effects of the pandemic and the recent disasters, especially in mango production.

On the other hand, the Mango Eat-All-You-Can once again features the world-renowned sweetest mango.

According to Quezon, this year’s mango allocation for the eat-all-you-can event is around 10 metric tons.

Meanwhile, Assistant Provincial Agriculturist Alvin Nava said that the event area, which is also on the capitol grounds, can accommodate 100 persons per batch for 30 minutes, and based on their record, each individual can consume more or less two and a half kilos of mango on average within the said period.

Nava also noted that, unlike other events for the Manggahan, this event will only be held on selected days – May 14, 15, 20, 21, and 22.

Other activities lined up for the Manggahan Festival 2022 include the bike fun ride, a cultural showcase entitled "Panakayon" (Journey), e-games, a jobs fair, entertainment bands, and more.

With this, OIC tourism officer Ferrer is inviting local and foreign tourists to experience and taste the sweetest festival in the country. (AAL/FRG/PIA6)
