DOT trains Ballesteros locals on harp making

Other locals to be trained on how to play the instrument

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) - - Tourists who will soon visit Ballesteros town in this province will enjoy the music of local harpists.

This after the Department of Tourism Regional Office No. 2, in partnership with the Local Government Unit of Ballesteros, spearheaded the harp making workshop on May 18 with the aim to conduct knowledge transfers on how to make harp as a livelihood.

Regional Director Fanibeth Domingo said that the workshop also aimed to align one of the department’s function to support, advance and promote the protection, maintenance and preservation of historical, cultural and natural endowments.

Domingo said this can be attained in cooperation with appropriate government agencies and the private sector.

After the harp making and assembly process, a harp playing workshop will follow to train locals to play the instrument for guests in the tourism circuits and in various tourism destinations and occasions as a form of additional entertainment.

According to the tourism department here, the Harp Making industry is a dying industry in Ballesteros, Cagayan. 

“It will be a challenging endeavor for the local community to be able to re-claim its glory which forms part the culture and history of the people in the Cagayan Valley Region,” the press release stated.

The tourism department here has lined up series of online training seminars to capacitate the participants in sustaining the business of harp making, playing for tourists and selling harps for souvenirs. (MDCT/ With reports from Department of Tourism/PIA Cagayan)
