Filipino SEA Games medalists receive P35M cash incentives

QUEZON CITY, (PIA) – To show government’s all-out support to Filipino athletes, almost P35 million cash incentives were awarded to medal-winning competitors during the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.

In the recognition ceremony on Tuesday, President Rodrigo Duterte commended the athletes, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and all the coaches for doing a good job in the recent regional multi-sports event and for bringing honor to the country.

“Let me take this chance to express my appreciation for all the medalists’ and other athletes’ record-breaking feats — I salute you for showcasing your talents and giving your best, despite limitations in your training due to the COVID19 pandemic,” Duterte said.

Duterte also awarded the 178 medalists the Order of Lapu-Lapu, which is conferred to those who accomplished extraordinary acts of service and exceptional contributions to the Philippines.

“I deeply thank you for representing the country with resiliency, excellence, and sportsmanship, and for bringing pride and honor to the Filipino people amidst the challenges that you had to face in these uncertain times.” Duterte added.

The Philippines placed fourth in the just concluded SEA Games, with its athletes garnered 52 golds, 70 silvers, and 104 bronze medals in 37 sports out of 39 participated in by the Filipino athletes.
