PENRO-Abra opens Environment Month with ‘Community Plant Tree’

ABRA  –The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO)   and the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Bangued and Lagangilang led the kick-off   of the Environment Month celebration this June through seedlings distribution activity dubbed “Community Plant Tree”.
 
Around 400 grown seedlings of Mahogany, Gmelina and Narra were distributed   for free last June 1. The seedlings were provided by CENRO Bangued and Lagangilang from their own nurseries.


Provincial Environment  Officer Engr. Marcelo Bumidang said the activity aims to encourage local communities to plant trees to promote in building a greener, healthier and more sustainable environment.


 Bumidang said   that the seedlings distributed are   “fast-growing species” which can be used and harvested by the beneficiaries around 15 years from now.


“Pag naitanim na,  madalinglumaki at maka-contribute ito sa problema natin sa climate change and then later on, pwede naman nilang pakinabangan after harvest like for lumbers and other uses,” he informed.
 
 
He said  they have listed  the names of  those who  got  seedlings  for their monitoring.


Gudelia Ramos, 69 years-old, she said that the seedlings of gmelina and mahogany will be important in keeping her farm greener.
 
“Itatanim ko sa maliit na farm ko ito sa Pidigan kasi inaalagaan ko ang kapaligiran niya, at tinataniman ko ng sari-saring mga punong-kahoy,” she said.
 
PENRO-Abra is also set to lead multiple tree planting activities this month including clean-up drives, run for a cause, environment quiz bee, among others. and others.(JDP/CAGT-PIA CAR, Abra)
