NBI, PNP warn the public vs. online scams

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) - -  The National Bureau of Investigation and  Philippine National Police warned the public of the proliferation of online scams with everyone’s easy access to the internet.

NBI- Antique Assistant District Director Aldrin G. Mercader, during the meeting of agencies engaged in peace and order and public safety, urged the public to be vigilant against online scams sent through email and social media.

He noted that most of the victims that fall prey to unscrupulous individuals are senior citizens, mostly separated or widowed seniors.

Mercader said the victims were promised valuable packages, huge amount of money, or investments in the country but the main motive really is to get the money from them.

NBI reported having received complaints of scams in Antique.  Some already have paid down payments for the dubious transactions before they reported to the NBI.

He encouraged them to report to NBI suspected dealings early on so they can be acted upon immediately.

On the part of the Philippine National Police, San Jose Municipal Police Station Chief of Police  lawyer Benjo E. Clarite reiterated his reminder to the public not to trust their personal information to friends on social media or to those sending messages via their cell phone or “textmates.”

He urged the public to be wary of "budol-budol gang,” or scammers who are out to take advantage of someone they thought would succumb to their ill motives.

Clarite also assured that the police presence is intensified in public places and vital installations like banks and remittance centers. (JBG/PSM/PIA- Antique)
