Philippine Red Cross Baguio thanks blood donors, invites more

BAGUIO CITY(PIA) -- The  Philippine Red Cross Baguio  Chapter and the  Department of Health-  and express  their gratitude to the blood donors, health workers,  volunteer and stakeholders who continue to support   voluntary blood donation in order to have sufficient supply for patients needing blood transfusion.

"We would like to thank the kind hearted blood donors and we hope to have more people like them," said Medical technologist Jennelyn M. Maguslog-Terre of the PRC.

In the latest bloodletting activity during the commemoration of World Blood Donor Day on June 14 at the Porta Vaga roof deck, Baguio City, 65 donors donated a total of 29,250 ml of blood.

Maguslog-Terre said the blood collected will definitely save lives. Blood donations are a sustenance in emergencies, disasters, crises, and for people who need transfusions.

She   shared that they receive a lot of demand for blood but they cannot provide the request because there is no stock in the blood bank. Thus, she is inviting walk-in blood givers to visit PRC office which is open 24 hours.

Based on the Red Cross guidelines on donating blood, anybody 18 to 65 years old, with clean bill of health and weighs at least 110 pounds or 50 kilos can donate blood. It only takes ten minutes for a person to donate 450 cc of blood.

She clarified that  PRC  is not  selling  blood; what is being charged  when  patients get blood from its blood bank  is  service  fee  for  blood screening, testing  and  component preparation.

Aside from doing a humanitarian act, donating blood regularly also benefits the blood donor.

Jonathan Munar of Radyo Pilipinas donates blood during the World Blood Donors Day on June 14, 2022.

Dr. Jasmin Reyes-Igama, cancer and blood diseases specialist and a former Red Cross-Baguio board of director, explained that blood donation helps the donor shed extra calories. It can also reduce blood cholesterol level.

After donating blood, the number of blood cells in the body decreases, which stimulates the bone marrow to produce new, fresh red blood cells in order to replenish the loss, Igama said.

Blood donation also reduces the risk of heart disease and gives the donor the chance to have a free check of blood pressure and cholesterol levels - two of the major risk factors of heart disease.

Donors also get the chance to have free screening of their blood type, she added
