'Inday Sara' takes oath as 15th VP of the Philippines

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) – Presidential daughter and Davao City mayor Sara Zimmerman Duterte was sworn into office as the 15th vice president of the Philippine Republic at her hometown of Davao City, June 19.

With her mother Elizabeth Zimmerman bearing the bible, Duterte took her oath of office before her former law professor Supreme Court Associate Justice Ramon Paul Hernando at San Pedro Square, between Davao City Hall and San Pedro Cathedral.

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte personally led the first family’s attendance at the event as the younger Duterte assumed the country's second-highest office.

President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., whose own inauguration is set on June 30, also witnessed the event with his wife lawyer Louise “Liza” Araneta-Marcos.

VP Duterte deviated from usual practice and chose to hold her inauguration 11 days before the start of her six-year term at noon of June 30, saying that this is an opportunity for her to be with the people of Davao and Mindanao, as a whole, in this historic occasion.

In her inaugural speech, the vice president highlighted national hero Dr. Jose Rizal's teaching of selflessness and sacrifice as means to change the country's fate and shape the children's future.

VP Duterte then urged Filipinos to show their love for the country by taking care of their families and communities, despite the seemingly unending challenges that come their way.

She added that a strong and happy family is crucial in any child's development and that parents are expected to teach their children of integrity, discipline, respect, and compassion for others.

"Never forget that it is the duty of each Filipino to emphasize that education begins at home," she noted.

The vice president then rallied Filipinos to unite in realizing their aspirations for the country.

VP Duterte, who will serve as education secretary under PBBM’s administration, is the nation's 3rd female vice president after Pampanga representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo.

The inauguration was preceded by a thanksgiving mass at San Pedro Cathedral and was then followed by a Musikahan-Pasasalamat concert by music artists and TV personalities. (AAL/BPS/PIA Antique)
