New BSP Iloilo building breaks ground

ILOILO CITY (PIA) - - The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) - Iloilo held the groundbreaking ceremony of its new building on Friday, June 17.

Monetary Board and incoming BSP Governor Felipe Medalla led the time capsule laying for the groundbreaking on the site at the Iloilo Business Park in Mandurriao District.

During the ceremonies, Medalla was joined by Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr., Mayor Jerry Treñas, outgoing Tourism Secretary and now BSP Deputy Governor Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, Megaworld President Andrew Tan, other Monetary Board members, and BSP-Iloilo officials.

With the new location, Medalla, in his message, expects more efficient service from BSP Iloilo.

“The way I look at it, the new place will be a much better place, this new economy is much better. We will be more efficient when we move here,” said Medalla.

On the other hand, Treñas said the groundbreaking marked another milestone for BSP, an organization that maintains price stability conducive to a balance and sustainable growth of the economy and employment.

“Right on this site, a new building will rise that will pave the way for broad and convenient access to high quality financial services and consider the interest of our general public,” said Treñas.

The Mayor assured the safety and security in the site as new offices of the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices will also be built in the area.

BSP Managing Director for Regional Operations Rosabel Guerrero said the announcement of Treñas is a welcome development for them, noting that security is among the considerations when they choose their site location.

Another factor that they considered the new location was because of its accessibility to stakeholders, airport and seaports.

“Important yan eh because in regional operations, particularly branch operation namin, ang aming talagang primary res-

ponsibility here, is to ensure that the supply of currency will be available to the public. So, ‘yong pagtratransport ng currency is important,” said Guerrero.

In terms of currency transactions, according to Guerrero, Iloilo has relatively high transactions, next to Cebu, in the Visayas.

She said they are hoping that in two years time they will be able to hold office in the site that will house the new building which is sustainable and adheres to the BSP standard for branch building.

The event was also attended by officials and representatives from government agencies and the business sector. (JBG/laf/PIA6-Iloilo)
