Cong. Yap backs Pres. BBM as agri chief

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (PIA) -- Benguet Representative-elect Eric Go Yap welcomed the decision of incoming President Ferdinand "Bongbong"  Marcos Jr. to head the Department of Agriculture  to ensure that food security will be on top of the  administration's agenda.

“Kahanga hanga ito at dito natin makikita ang political will ng ating susunod na Pangulo. We are in full support of his agenda to rebuild the value chain of agriculture," Yap said in a statement.

The country urgently needs a capable leader who will safeguard the country's food security and prioritize the needs of the farmers, and this declaration shows that the agriculture sector will be his priority particularly with the problem on vegetable smuggling which greatly affects the farmers of Benguet and the Cordillera region, he said.

"We are very grateful that PBBM heeded to our appeal to address vegetable smuggling which affects the livelihood of our farmers, particularly in Benguet,” Yap said.

He shared that during the campaign period, he personally discussed the issue on illegal smuggling several times with the incoming President and he expressed his strong desire to combat vegetable smuggling and to hold accountable those involved in the unlawful acts.

Benguet farmers continue to seek support from the national government and other offices and agencies to put a stop to the smuggling problem which continues to affect them even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Benguet produces 80 to 85 percent of highland vegetables that are brought from the capital town of La Trinidad to the different parts of the country.

Based on statistics from the DA, Cordillera trades about two  million kilograms of assorted vegetables daily. (JDP/ RMC- PIA CAR)
