DOH strengthens actions vs dengue surge in WV

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Health (DOH) in Western Visayas intensified the call for action against the increasing dengue cases in the region.

During a recent online Kapihan program, Dr. Bea Camille Natalaray, Infectious Disease Section chief of the DOH 6, reported that a total of 426 new dengue cases were reported in Western Visayas for Morbidity Week 23, bringing the total number of dengue cases in the region to 3,029, as of June 11, 2022

The figure equates to a 241 percent increase compared to the 889 cases in the same period last year.

Negros Occidental remains to have the highest recorded number of cases in the region with 1,161 noting a 521% increase; followed by Antique with 782 cases; Iloilo province – 469; Bacolod City – 206; Capiz – 172; Aklan – 113; Iloilo City – 94; and Guimaras – 32.

Of the mentioned areas, only Iloilo City recorded a decrease in cases compared to its 116 cases of the same period last year.

The number of dengue-related deaths also increased from eight last year to 23 deaths this year.

Despite such a spike in cases, Dr. Natalaray noted that the number of reported new cases based on the data of the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) still does not reach the alert and epidemic threshold.

“For the current morbidity week, we haven’t reached the alert threshold and the epidemic threshold as a region,” she explained.

Natalaray emphasized for local government units to conduct epidemic threshold monitoring for the detection of possible alerts or outbreaks of Dengue cases in their respective localities.

She also reiterated the activation of the Dengue Task Force at all local government levels, especially in areas with clustering of cases, and immediately enforce preventive and mitigating activities like the 4S strategy.

The 4S stands for search and destroy mosquito breeding sites; secure self-protection; seek early consultation; and, support fogging or spraying in areas with increasing cases to prevent an imminent outbreak.

“We also encourage our LGUs to invest in policies to support financially our responses to dengue,” Natalaray added.

Other activities done by DOH 6 include the re-orientation of health workers on revised dengue clinical case management, vector control and surveillance strategies, and allocation of dengue NS1 test kits to LGUs for prompt diagnosis.

She also pointed out the strengthening of early detection and consultation to diagnose patients for proper medication having in mind that several diseases have similar symptoms, especially dengue and other diseases emerging during the rainy season.

Meanwhile, other than dengue, the health department also cautioned the public of other diseases that emerge and increase in cases during this season to include water-borne diseases like diarrhea, influenza-like illnesses, and leptospirosis.

To prevent such diseases, Natalaray reminds the public to ensure clean drinking water, proper hygiene, and wear proper protective gear when descending flood waters and during rains. (AAL/FRG/PIA6)
