8 cacao farms in Kalinga assessed

CITY OF TABUK, Kalinga (PIA) - -Eight cacao farms in the province were assessed for possible source of cacao beans for the production of premium chocolates.

 
The assessment conducted from June 30 to July 3 was carried out by the Department of Science and Technology-Kalinga, Department of Trade and Industry- Kalinga and CMV TXOKOLAT Company.


Chocolatier Christian M. Valdes and Chef Zandro Dimaculangan of the CMV TXOKOLAT Company conducted the evaluation on local cacao produce to determine possible suppliers of fermented beans for their business. The cacao beans were characterized to determine quality and suitability as raw material for the production of premium chocolates.


Cacao farms assessed in Tabuk City are the Daguitan Kan Tangkib Eco Village Farm in Bagumbayan, Em Bangao Farm in Balong, Bulaat Integrated Farm in Dupag, Baluyan Farm in Gobgob, Dalsen Farm in Burayukan, and Nambucayan Agri Cooperative in Nambucayan. In Pasil is the EJ Integrated Farm, and in Balbalan is the Balantoy Balbalan Farm.


According to DOST-PSTC Kalinga, the assessment is also a vehicle for the farmers to learn the emerging opportunities in the cacao industry for them to be inspired to produce their own bean to bar. It also seeks to improve the quality of cacao beans through the introduction of postharvest methodologies and discussion on innovative cacao farming practices. Moreover, it aims to connect Kalinga cacao farmers to big companies for the establishment of a market linkage. (JDP/PAB-PIA CAR, Kalinga)
