LEGAZPI CITY, ALBAY (PIA) – Commuters will reduce their travel time to and from Sorsogon and Albay once the Bacon – Manito Road, also known as the Albay-Sorsogon Connector Road, is finished.
In a report to Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, DPWH Region V Director Virgilio C. Eduarte said that the connector road is one of the priority projects in the Bicol Region as it would directly link Legazpi City – Punta de Jesus Road in Albay and Junction Sorsogon – Bacon – Manito Road in Sorsogon.
“Locals and visitors will be able to utilize this all-weather road very soon. We are targeting completion of ongoing sections before the end of this year,” Eduarte said.
The Bacon – Manito Road, also known as the Albay-Sorsogon Connector Road, is located within the mountainous terrain of Bacon and Manito towns with a total length of 15.87 kilometers and six bridges along the east coast of Albay and Sorsogon. This include thr bridges in Suwa, Sto. Niño, Gayong, and Osiao 1 and 2 in Manito town; and the Banasi bridge in the Bacon, Sorsogon section. (DPWH photo)
Eduarte has earlier said that this is considered as a mega road infrastructure project traversing the villages of Gajo as well as Tiris, Osiao, Gayong and Sto. Niño of Bacon district in Sorsogon Province, and the coastal areas of Cavit and Pawa in Manito, Albay.
He said the project has so far received an allocation of ₱2.21 billion. An additional ₱500 million budget has been requested for the remaining civil works covering the installation of active and passive slope protection system, metal beam guardrails and continuation of the concretion of the unpaved areas.
“When fully completed, Albay – Sorsogon Connector Road will reduce the travel time of motorists by one hour, benefitting as many as 5,000 motorists daily, and eventually improving the economic condition of areas along its route,” Eduarte said.
The project is located within the mountainous terrain of Bacon and Manito towns with a total length of 15.87 kilometers and six bridges along the east coast of Albay and Sorsogon.
The six bridges, with a total net length of 296.50 linear meters, are in Suwa, Sto. Niño, Gayong, and Osiao 1 and 2 in Manito town; and the Banasi bridge in the Bacon, Sorsogon section.
The Bacon, Sorsogon-Manito, Albay road is part of the “Build, Build, Build” program of former President Rodrigo Duterte designed to modernize the infrastructure development in the countryside. (PIA5/Albay/DPWH5)
