Antique to create office to strengthen nutrition program

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) - -  The Antique Provincial Nutrition Council unanimously agreed to push for the creation of the Provincial Nutrition Office to strengthen the implementation of the nutrition program in the province as well as in compliance with the Mandanas-Garcia Ruling.

In a resolution, the Council requested the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Antique to pass an ordinance creating the Provincial Nutrition Office under the Office of the Governor.

Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Mayela Mae P. Ladislao, who chairs SP Committee on Health, Sanitation, and Social Services, emphasized the  importance of creating an office to give priority attention to the problem of malnutrition in the province.

Nutritionist/Dietician Jocelyn Morano, in a radio program reported the result of the

Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute in 2019 that Antique placed second in all provinces in Visayas Region to have the highest prevalence rate of stunted children at 38.9 percent next to the province of Samar with 42 percent.

It can be recalled that Antique has been on top of the list for the past years in Region 6 in terms of data on stunted and underweight children based on Operation Timbang Plus results.

Acting Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Dr. Leoncio Q. Abiera, Jr. said that the creation of the office hopes to provide human resources and budget allocation to nutrition programs to respond to the needs of the target communities and local government units.

Ladislao said that the undertaking towards the eradication of malnutrition involved a collective action not only in the health and nutrition sector but also among those in charge of food security, and environmental sanitation among other agencies.

Morano also cited the result of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI)

survey that food insecurity is one of the reasons for malnutrition in the province. Provincial Agriculturist Nicolasito Calawag also committed to support the endeavors of the local government units in food production, especially at the barangay level.

The Council is optimistic about the creation of the Provincial Nutrition office once it is submitted to the SP. (JBG/PSM/PIA-Antique)
