Banaue reopens tourism activities, Banaue Hotel still close

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Tourism – Cordillera announced the re-opening of the of tourism activities in Banaue, Ifugao effective July 12, 2022.


“With significant clearing operations done on the roads and trails leading to Banaue, Ifugao which was affected by massive flashfloods and landslides on July 7, 2022 due to strong rains, the Municipality of Banaue has officially lifted the temporary suspension of all tourism activities in the area effective July 12, 2022,” according to the DOT Tourism Travel Advisory.  


Banaue Mayor Joel Bungallon signed the order lifting the temporary suspension of all tourism activities in the municipality.  

Most areas of Banaue and some parts of Hungduan in Ifugao were affected by flashfloods and landslides following the heavy downpour of rain afternoon of July 7, 2022. The flashfloods caused the closing of the roads leading to Banaue and damaging of several houses, infrastructures and other establishments including the Banaue Hotel and Youth Hostel.


The DOT-CAR said that with the declaration on the resumption of tourism activities, travelers are advised to closely coordinate with their respective accommodation establishments for confirmation of bookings and to ensure that the establishment is open for business as clearing operations are still being conducted in most areas in Banaue.


All tourists and travelers are advised to take extra caution while traveling to tourism destinations especially when heavy rains occur.


The Banaue LGU also advised the public to take extra precautions in using some of the foot paths in Barangays Pulo, Cambulo, Batad and Bangaan.

Meanwhile, the Banaue Hotel remains closed on the order of   DOT Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco to ensure the safety of guests and personnel as some of its areas were damaged by the flashfloods and landslides.


Frasco has ordered further assessment on the extent of damages of the Banaue Hotel thru the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority in coordination with the Department of Public Works and Highways-Cordillera.


During the July 7 incident, Frasco reached out and spoke to Banaue Mayor Joel Bungallon to offer immediate assistance in the handling and free transportation of stranded tourists, and any other assistance the LGU may need from the DOT.
