DOLE pushes for livelihood and employment program for PWDs

ZAMBOANGA CITY, July 19 (PIA) – Department of Labor and Employment 9 (DOLE-9) aims to provide more employment and livelihood benefits for Persons with Disability through job fairs and trainings available for them.

The 44th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation week celebration kicks-off on Monday (July 18) with a motorcade participated by the PWD organizations and communities, National Government Agencies and stakeholders.

Around 200 PWDs in Zamboanga City received tokens and services from the member agencies of the Regional Committee on Disability Affairs like free massage, haircut, and consultation. The week-long celebration with a theme: “Working with Government in Achieving Equal Access in Education, in Employment, and Livelihood toward Empowerment with Persons with Disabilities”, will also provide trainings to PWDs like training on Google Workspace and social media marketing.

To address the challenges of the community in employment and livelihood, aside from the trainings, DOLE-9 will also conduct the first ever PWD Job Fair through the Public Employment Service Office.

“We are all guided by the principle with respect for the inherent dignity and autonomy of differently abled persons. Respect for the difference as part of humanity and diversity, because some of our brothers and sisters are different so we provide them with access and we want further inclusion.” DOLE-9 Assistant Regional Director Imelda F. Gatinao said.

NDPR Week is observed every year for a week to raise public awareness of disability-related issues and problems and to motivate all citizens to actively contribute to improving the economic and social circumstances of all people with disabilities (PWDs) in our society. “We are requesting the PWD’s to participate and take this opportunity to inform our government officials on what really your needs are.” Department of Social Welfare and Development Regional Director Atty. Sittie Raifah Pamaloy-Hassan said. (NBE/MLE/OOJ/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
