DOH 6 targets 1.6M individuals for COVID 19 booster shot

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH-WV-CHD) launched here, July 26,  the "PINASLAKAS" to reach more individuals for COVID-19 shots.

DOH 6 aims to reach more than 1.6 million eligible individuals for their booster doses against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) across Western Visayas within the first 100 days of the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.

PINASLAKAS, the government-revitalized vaccination drive to ramp-up vaccination acceptance, also targets around 97,000 senior citizens for their primary series vaccines.

“The DOH, in coordination with the local vaccine operations centers and implementing units, is revitalizing our COVID 19 campaign to achieve 90% primary series coverage among our senior citizens and 50% first booster coverage among the general population within the first 100 days of the new administration,” said Dr. Ma. Sophia Pulmones, OIC ARD of DOH 6, during the launch of PINASLAKAS.

Pulmones noted that after 16 months since the COVID-19 vaccination campaign was rolled out in March last year in Western Visayas, a total of 5,188,247 or 80% of the target general population have been fully vaccinated.

However, according to her, the uptake of vaccination among target populations, especially senior citizens under the A2

priority group, is declining and boosters are slowest since the start of the campaign.

To date, Pulmones said that only 76.81% or 564,663 of the targeted 735,157 senior citizens in the region have been fully vaccinated while booster coverage stands at 12.16% or only 788,183 of the targeted 6.4 million.

“We all know that primary series coverage among senior citizens and booster doses of the eligible population are critical in maintaining the country’s wall of immunity,” she said.

Pulmones said that the nationwide vaccination drive is also a reminder that the fight against COVID-19 is not yet over as cases are again increasing over the last few weeks in the region.

She noted that with the emergence of new sub-variants, there is a need to get vaccinated to be assured of protection and safety against the dreaded disease.

“Our data shows that despite the increase in COVID-19 confirmed cases, most are asymptomatic or having mild cases. This is one indicator to show that our vaccines work effectively as they protect us from having severe infections that could either lead to hospitalization or even death,” said Pulmones.

Meanwhile, she lauded all the implementing units from the provincial

health offices to the municipal and city health officials and barangay health workforce for their relentless efforts to vaccinate their people as she reiterated the DOH's call for their continued support in the campaign.

“We hope that more of our partners, both from the government and private sectors, will be inspired anew and stand united to help promote and advocate for COVID-19 vaccination and booster,” added Pulmones.

On the other hand, some 235 have registered, including the learners and parents from the Philippine Science High School, to avail of the vaccination and booster doses offered during the launching activity at Robinsons Place Jaro . (JBG/laf/PIA6-Iloilo)
