Consultative meeting convenes hog traders, consolidators, farmers

ILOILO (PIA) -- Hog traders, consolidators and farmers met with the Department of Agriculture (DA) Western Visayas officials for a consultative meeting on the live weight price of hogs.

Raisers conveyed their concern on having the most risks in the value chain for some chances of not being paid by buyers in Luzon and getting the least Return on Investment (ROI), according to the agency.

“Due to geographical distances from the buyers, they are often forced to settle to be paid at a breakeven scale cost. The breakeven cost for the hog raisers on their produce is P132.00,” the DA press statement said.

DA-WV Regional Executive Director Remelyn Recoter consulted the participants on their recommendation regarding this concern of hog players.

Inputs such as strengthening farmer organizations and prices at the legitimate livestock auction markets, and activating the Local Price Monitoring Council in local government units shall be part of the long-term approaches of the agency.

"Help support our local hog raisers by buying their stocks at P140 – P150 per kilo live weight price,” Recoter told the traders, citing the need of continuous

protection of the swine industry in the region against African Swine Fever (ASF) and any diseases.

Meanwhile, DA WV Regulatory Division chief Dr. Jonic F. Natividad and Regional Veterinary Quarantine Officer Dr. John Roel Hilario discussed the Regional African Swine Fever (ASF) status and domestic movements of animals.

DA Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division Chief Maria Teresa Solis also shared the swine cost structure, hog prices, pork, and feeds in the region. (JBG/DA-WV PR/LMLE/PIA6)
