Peace and order sector end decades-long rido in Ungkaya Pukan, Basilan

ISABELA CITY, Basilan, Aug 08 (PIA) – The peace and order sector in Basilan has settled another long-time feud or "rido” in the Municipality of Ungkaya Pukan on July 30, 2022.

The peace and order sector, composed of the law enforcement agencies, civil society organizations, local government units and the Ministry of Public Order and Safety, successfully settled the rido between the Matindo and Akil family in Barangay Kamamburingan, Ungkaya Pukan, which is a decade-long family feud.

Shahid P. Akbara, Community Affairs Officer III of the Ministry of Public Order and Safety said that the rido started in 2001 and the conflict became graver in April 15, 2018 when a shooting incident transpired in Barangay Kamamburingan that resulted to the death of four (4) individuals from Matindo family where the suspect is allegedly a relative of Akil family.

Upon peaceful negotiations, both parties agreed to settle for a more peaceful community.

During the settlement, Mayor Jomar M. Maturan emphasized the need for cooperation to promote peace in their locality.

"Kung hindi tayo magkakaisa, pano natin mapapanatili ang kapayapaan ng ating lugar? Ipagpaliban muna natin ang ating mga tapang at iuna ang ating pag uunawa dahil tayo lang din ang mahihirapan. Walang taong nagiging mapayapa ang kanyang pag iisip kung ito'y my iniiwasang tao. Tulung-tulong tayo sa pag protekta sa ating kapayapaan," Hon. Maturan said.

Recently, the law enforcement agencies spearheaded by the Ministry of Public Order and Safety convened and discussed issues, challenges and recommendations for a more collaborative partnership to sustain peace and development in the province. The group envisions for a rido-free community. (RVC/EDT/NDR-PIA Basilan with report from Shahid P. Akbara, CAO III-MPOS)
