LAOAG CITY (PIA) – Ilokanos marked the 116th birth anniversary of the late Governor Roque B. Ablan Sr. through a simple program and wreath-laying ceremony on August 9.
The ceremony was held at the Ablan Shrine and was attended by the Ablan family with local officials, representatives from the non-government organizations, and residents as they pay tribute to the late governor and World War II hero.
Police officers led the 21-gun salute in honor of Ablan.

In his message, Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc urged Ilokanos to live out Ablan’s legacy of patriotism and bravery displayed by the Ilokano leader.
“Today is a great day and occasion for us to look back and to draw inspiration from and to make sure that we live out his legacy as best as we can every day,” said Manotoc.
He also added, “We may not face the gravity of challenges that he faced but I believe that we can carry out and display the same bravery and concern for our kakailian.”
This year’s guest speaker is Governor Elias C. Bulut Jr. from the province of Apayao.
“Through forging mutual partnership, we will overcome endeavors and that the province of Ilocos Norte will always be there to assist us, just as the late war hero Roque B. Ablan Sr. was there to assist and overcome surmountable odds,” Bulut said.
Right after the program, various activities were also conducted at the Robinsons Place in San Nicolas town as part of the Ablan Day celebration.
Ilokanos availed of the free legal service from the Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Ilocos Norte chapter; bloodletting activity from the Philippine Red Cross; medical mission from the Ilocos Norte Medical Society; and pre-natal checkup from the Philippine Obstetrics and Gynecological Society.
Also, a lecture on the life of the late Gov. Ablan was discussed by Jayson Antonio, a local historian in Ilocos Norte. (JCR/AMB/MJTAB/JDMF, PIA Ilocos Norte)
