OWWA 6 holds annual scholars conference

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Region 6 conducted the 2022 OWWA Scholars Conference, August 10, at District21 Hotel, here.

The activity, with the theme “Harnessing Youth Potential: Addressing Gaps and barriers,” was participated in by 47 out of the 50 scholars from the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz Iloilo and Guimaras.

They are scholars under the four scholarship programs of OWWA, namely, the Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP), OFW Dependent Scholarship Program (ODSP), Educational Assistance by Scholarship in Emergencies (Project EASE), and Educational Livelihood Assistance Program (ELAP).

According to OWWA 6 officer-in-charge Rizza Joy Moldes, the activity is an annual undertaking of the agency and serves as a learning support mechanism for all OWWA-maintained scholars.

“On top of the financial assistance OWWA offers for their tuition and other fees, we believe that we still have that responsibility to our scholars to be able to help them address the various issues that are detrimental to their welfare not just as students, but also as young people,” said Moldes.

She added that this activity is used as an avenue to enhance the personality of the scholars and increase their awareness on elevant issues and concerns.

Topics covered include financial literacy for young people, the role of youth in disaster preparedness, responsible use of social media, and addressing the impact of mental health challenges on young people.

With this, Moldes noted that OWWA expects the scholars to feel that they are not alone, especially regarding the mental health concern of being a dependent of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW).

“We want them to feel that OWWA is not just here to offer them educational assistance, but we can also be a place for them to turn to or seek for help,” she stressed.

Meanwhile, the same activity will also be conducted for 30 OWWA scholars in Negros Occidental on August 12, 2022.

On the other hand, OWWA 6 advised interested applicants for their scholarship programs to visit their website and Facebook page for details in regards to the mechanics and requirements of the application.

Applications for EDSP and ODSP are up until August 31, 2022. (JBG/FRG/PIA6)
