Philippine Red Cross crosses river to extend aid in Ilocos Sur

VVIGAN CITY (PIA) — The Philippine Red Cross, together with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), crossed Abra River to reach the coastal barangay of Puro, in Caoayan town, Ilocos Sur, to provide hygiene kits and other immediate needs on August 2.

Some 200 families in the said barangay each received hygiene kits containing 12 body soaps, five laundry soaps, 40 sanitary pads, five bath towels, toilet papers, tooth brushes, two toothpaste tubes, and razors.

PRC and IFRC also distributed 400 jerry cans and conducted hygiene promotion for 12 families, or 92 individuals, and distributed 5,000 liters of water through a water storage bladder in Barangay Villamar, Caoayan.

PRC chair and chief executive officer Richard Gordon said, “Walang maiiwan sa pagbangon sa nagdaang lindol. Laging handa ang Red Cross na tunguhin ang pinakamalalayong komunidad sa Ilocos Sur at iba pang probinsyang naapektuhan upang maipaabot natin ang ating tulong sa kanila.”

The PRC conducted this initiative to remain true to its vision to efficiently deliver humanitarian services to the most vulnerable communities in the country, particularly the hard-to-reach communities affected by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake recently.

“Matitiyak ng ating mga kababayan sa Caoayan, Ilocos Sur na katuwang nila ang Red Cross sa muli nilang pagbangon mula sa nagdaang lindol,” Gordon added.

Moreover, the PRC Ilocos Sur Chapter has distributed 312,000 liters of water through the PRC water tankers and conducted hygiene promotion activities among 1,815 families or 7,699 individuals as of 8:00 pm of August 9.

They have also served 3,282 hot meals, supplied 2,700 face masks, and given 679 hygiene kits to affected residents.(JCR/AMB/ATV, PIA Ilocos Sur
