Shared service facility to boost Iloilo’s dairy products

ILOILO CITY (PIA) --   A variety of dairy products is seen to boost in Iloilo province with the establishment of the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) 6 shared service facility (SSF) for dairy milk processing in Calinog town.

The dairy processing facility is the first dairy SSF granted by the DTI to the province and the second SSF project in Calinog, following the SSF project on Traditional Embroidery and Loomwoven Textile in 2020.

Over 160 farmers composing of members of the Calinog Farmers Agriculture Cooperative, Leon ConFed Farmers Dairy Association and Guinhulacan Farmers Association will benefit from this facility.

The CAF Agri Coop consists of farmers from the municipalities of Calinog, Lambunao, Bingawan, Duenas, Passi City, San Dionisio, Lemery, Zarraga and Badiangan; and Ivisan and Roxas City in the province of Capiz.

In a press report, DTI 6 regional director Rebecca Rascon anticipates expanding the target reach of the dairy products not just in Calinog but throughout Western Visayas.

The DTI also turned over to the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) at West Visayas State University (WVSU), the project’s cooperator, the equipment worth P1.4 million for the operation of the facility.

The equipment includes a pasteurizing tank, milk pump, Y strainers, cooling tank, milk storage, cooling tower, hot water generator, dairy tubes, milking machines (vacuum and petrol type), and top chest freezer.

Rascon said that DTI is driven to do more for the local farmers to support their families and cater to institutional markets such as the school-based feeding program of the Department of Education (DepEd) and Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) supplementary feeding program.

Meanwhile, Dr. Myrtel Alcazar, Senior Science Research Specialist of the PCC, expressed gratitude for the support of partner government entities such as the Department of Agriculture (DA), DTI, DepEd, DSWD, the local government unit of Calinog, and stakeholders. (JBG/DTI6/PIA Iloilo/LMLE)
