DOE's enhanced GEMP drive saves P2.1-B in 2020

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) -- The enhanced coverage of the Government Energy Management Program (GEMP), with about 7,441 institutions taking part, has accounted for a savings of about 230 million kilowatt hours in 2020.

This was conveyed by Department of Energy (DOE) - Visayas Field Office OIC director lawyer Russ Mark T. Gamallo in a message delivered for him by DOE - VFO Supervising Science Research Specialist Engr. Felix Timbal during an information, education and communication (IEC) campaign on GEMP for the members of the Capiz Association of Government Public Information Officers (CAGPIO) here.

The savings is equivalent to P2.1-billion during the period and has contributed to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions.

The DOE has also accounted for a savings of 169-million kilowatt hours and transport fuel equivalent to P1.7-billion from 2015 to 2019.

GEMP coverage was expanded and enhanced from the national  government agencies only to all government entities including departments, bureaus, agencies, government-owned and controlled corpo-

rations, government financial  institutions, executive branches, state universities and colleges and local government units with the passage of Republic Act No. 11285 or the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act in 2019.

The program's overall coverage is to reduce at least 10 percent in electricity and fuel consumption.

"We are here to help all of you in advance. We will conduct orientation before the third party spot check energy audit to prepare the needed requirements for it," said DOE - VFO Senior Science Research Specialist Engr. Miguel Trenuela during the Capiz - leg of the Visayas campaign.

More than 60 CAGPIO members and  representatives of various national government agencies and LGUs attended the information campaign that included an open forum after the DOE presentations on  GEMP for LGUs, Energy Efficiency and Conservation in government buildings and fuel conservation  tips.

The activity was also graced by Philippine Information Agency - 6 head Cheryl Amor, who underscored the importance of truthful, relevant and timely information as a key to the success of the DOE campaign.

Amor also urged the CAGPIO members to be transformers and storytellers to

engage their respective constituents to behavior change and be part in nation building.

The GEMP campaign in the province included DOE - VFO officials interaction with local mediamen and orientation to Capiz provincial and Roxas City governments. (JBG/AAL/PIA Capiz)
