'Trash-to-Cash' project gains public involvement

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- Iloilo City has stepped up its solid waste management campaign through the conduct of the "Trash-to-Cash” project.

This endeavor, which also forms part of the city’s 85th Charter Day Celebration, aims to teach the public on the proper garbage disposal as one of the means to save the environment during this pandemic.

The city government has provided barangays with mobile Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) trikes for transport of collected trash which were eventually converted to cash.

Residents also traded their recyclable materials for cash by turning them over to junk shops all over the city.

A total of 13 pilot barangays have participated to include Bakhaw, Benedicto, Boulevard, Buntatala, Calaparan, Compania Central, East Baluarte, North Baluarte, Salvacion Habog-Habog, South Baluarte, Sto. Niño, Tanza Esperanza, and West Habog-Habog.

In the city’s media statement, Assistant General Services Officer Engr. Neil Ravena said these barangays are situated near bodies of water in the metro.

“These barangays were prioritized to have rigid solid waste management system as Mayor Jerry Treňas said that solid waste must not reach bodies of water, particularly the Iloilo River and Batiano River," Ravena said.

To note, “Trash-to-Cash” was held at Sunburst Park in collaboration with partner institutions such as the German Agency for International Cooperation, European Union, and Central Philippine University.

The City Public Information Office also shared that Iloilo City was chosen as a pilot site for the Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) technical assistance grant from the Netherlands in January.

Facilitated by the Public Partner Partnership (PPP) Center of the Philippines, the project costs 87,000 euros or around P5-million.

“With this, Iloilo City is expected to benefit from the project which will also help address the growing need for an effective solid waste management system and will serve as ISWM model for other LGUs in the country,” the press report said. (JBG/LMLE/PIA Iloilo/City PIO Press Release)
