LAOAG CITY (PIA) – Officials of the City Government of Laoag, together with the presidents of the Tricycle Operators and Drivers’ Association (TODA) of the city, convened on Tuesday to discuss their petition for a P9.00 fare increase from the P11.00 basic fare.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic community quarantines, the regular tricycle fare increased from P11.00 to P20.00 and the fare for students, senior citizens, and people with disabilities increased from P9 to P15.
With the community quarantines being lifted and students returning to face-to-face classes, there have been complaints from both students and parents to return the original tricycle fare which is P11.00, under the 2011 city ordinance.
“The tricycle drivers and operators are contending that the original fare guide is no longer applicable because of high price of basic commodities particularly gasoline,” said City Mayor Michael Marcos Keon said.
The TODA presidents are proposing for the regular tricycle fare to be P20 and the students fare to be P15, the same rate as when community quarantines were implemented to subsidize the drivers to keep up with the increasing prices of gasoline at other motor parts.
