Capiz celebrates coco week

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) -- Various coconut products and by-products were showcased in a Coco Bazaar from August 30 to September 1 at the Robinsons Place here in view of the 36th Coconut Week celebration.

The week-long celebration with the theme “Masaganang Niyogan: Katuwang Tungo sa Maunlad na Kinabukasan” also highlighted the provincial launching of the Coconut Farmers Industry Development Plan (CFID).

The CFID serves as the basis in the utilization of the coco levy fund through various programs and projects that will consolidate the benefits and ensure increased income for our coconut farmers and farm workers, alleviate them from poverty and achieve social equality and
competitiveness, said Philippine Coconut Authority 6 regional manager Neil Melencion.

A regional launching of CFID was also conducted by the PCA Regional Office, Aug. 18, at Guimaras Provincial Gymnasium in Jordan town.

During the program, Capiz vice-governor Jaime Magbanua said that the provincial government will bridge in the development of the coconut industry to help the coconut farmers in the province.

“There is a need to invest in facilities and machineries to produce coconut – based products. Rest assured, we are here to support you,” Magbanua stressed.

The PCA has also conducted the trade and investment forum in view of the week-long celebration.

Coconut is the province’s third major high value crop, next to palay and sugarcane.

Meanwhile, Capiz Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (CaPENRO) consultant Glenn Beup, in a social media post, said that the provincial government has allocated funds for the procurement of coconut seeds for planting in 68-hectare upland areas each year.

“We will intensify coconut farming as an alternative livelihood among the farmers and as a contribution to the regreening efforts to mitigate soil erosion and flooding problems,” Beup noted. (JBG/AAL/PIA Capiz)
