DILG, DENR to lead planting of over 7K tree seedlings in Ilocos

DAGUPAN CITY (PIA) – Some 7,997 tree seedlings will be planted in different sites in the Ilocos region on Tuesday, September 13.

Julie Daquioag, regional director of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), said the activity will serve as the kick-off ceremony for the nationwide simultaneous tree planting activity by the agency with the theme: “Buhayin ang Pangangalaga ng Kalikasan.”

“The DILG’s tree planting project is in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Department of Agriculture (DA),” she added.

Different government agencies, civil society organizations, and other volunteers are expected to participate in the activity.

The DENR identified the tree planting sites per province.

For Ilocos Norte, there are 1,666 narra seedlings to be planted in barangay Valenciano in Banna while 500 agoho seedlings will be planted in barangay Suba in Paoay.

A total of 1,270 mahogany, 129 fire tree, 108 golden shower, and 500 ilang-ilang and fruit trees will be planted at barangay Bio in Tagudin, Ilocos Sur.

For La Union, 500 narra and banaba seedlings will be planted in barangay Gallano, Aringay.

In Pangasinan, some 3,324 narra and acacia mangium will be planted at the Daang Kalikasan in barangay Muelang, Mangatarem.

The mountainous area of Mangatarem became an attraction following the construction of the Daang Kalikasan road.

The area has become a tourist attraction but was closed to the public due to the disruption in the construction work as people flock to the area aside from the problem of forest fire caused by visitors as well as improper waste disposal by tourists. (JCR/AMB/PIA Pangasinan)
