NIA-MARIIS sets to release water from Magat dam due to TD Maymay

CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela (PIA) - - The National Irrigation Administration - Magat River Integrated Irrigation System (NIA-MARIIS) management has announced that the Magat Dam will release some of its stored water from in anticipation of the rainfall water that is expected to brought by the incoming Tropical Depression Maymay.

In an advisory from NIA-MARIIS, the management will start to open one of the spillway gates of the dam at 4:30 this afternoon of October 12, 2022 with an estimated 200 cubic meter per second outflow.

According to the advisory from NIA-MARIIS, the water outflow volume may increase depending on the monitored rainfall from the dam’s watershed.

Earlier, MARIIS Head Engr. Gileu Michael Dimoloy said that their office received a notice from Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) for the commencement of flood precaution period due to the incoming Tropical Depression Maymay.

As of 5:00am of October 12, 2022, the water elevation of Magat dam is at 187.40 meters, its inflow at 180.66 cubic meters per second while its outflow is at 99.44 cubic meters per second.

Dimoloy relayed that the NIA-MARIIS management already advised the residents living at the downstream of Magat river to take the necessary precautions, avoid crossing and staying at the river, and make sure that their livestock and large animals are kept in higher ground to avoid incidents of drowning.

He also said that their office was already mobilized to conduct early warnings and advisories using their mobile address system at the downstream area of the Magat River before the scheduled release of water from the dam this afternoon to ensure that the residents are informed and prepared.
