Zambo City supports breast cancer awareness month

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Oct 14 (PIA) – The City Government of Zamboanga launches and supports the “Pink October” campaign or the Breast Cancer awareness campaign for the whole month of October.

“We continue to campaign on Breast Cancer Awareness as it is one of the many leading cancers worldwide. It is important that we submit ourselves, especially women, to breast screening and do self-breast examination regularly,” said Wilfredo Aporongao, Head of City Gender and Development Office (GAD).

The local government, headed by Mayor John Dalipe observes the International Health Campaign on Breast Cancer Awareness Month or the “Pink October” pursuant to Section 17 of the City Ordinance No. 412 – GAD Code which provides for the “Day of Action for Breast Cancer Awareness” that aims to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of Breast Cancer through proper education on symptoms and treatment.

Pink October is also part of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival Celebration and launched the campaign during the opening salvo of the festival. The information and awareness campaign kickstart this month-long celebration with the Advocacy Float carrying the symbols of the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign.

The GAD Office, City Health Office (CHO) and the Local Council of Women spearhead this year’s campaign on Breast Cancer Awareness with the theme:  #HopefortheBreast: Every Ribbon Makes a Difference. There are prepared activities for the Pink October Celebration prepared by the local government.

The public is invited to join and participate in the activities like the free breast exam and consultation conducted by CHO as implementing partner, at the activity areas located at ground floor of East-Wing Atrium, KCC Mall de Zamboanga, which runs on October 7, 14, 21 and 28, 9am to 12nn.

The GAD office also encourages the public to support the campaign by wearing pink shirt or clothes every Fridays of the month in solidarity with all the women fighting for breast cancer.

“Together, we continue to foster an atmosphere of hope and support for everyone who struggled and those who continue to fight,” Aporongao added. (RVC/EDT/MLE/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
