Endangered Philippine Eagle spotted in Maragusan, Davao de Oro

NABUNTURAN, Davao de Oro - - The critically endangered Pithecophaga jefferyi known as Philippine Eagle has been sighted recently in Mount Candalaga Range in Maragusan, Davao de Oro.

According to reports from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), this is the first sighting of the Philippine Eagle, which is considered to be the world’s largest and rarest raptor, in the range.

Personnel from the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office CENRO in Monkayo initially observed the eagle during the early days of October.

On October 12 while conducting an actual verification survey, CENRO Monkayo team captured a photo of the eagle perching on a forest tree in the range at an elevation of approximately 1,200 meters above sea level.

The CENRO conservationists closely coordinated with the local government unit of Maragusan through Ferdinand Bautista, head of the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), and Barangay Captain Maritess Gran of New Albay to strengthen the forest protection campaign against violators and augment enforcement for protection and conservation methods in the range, especially with the presence of the Philippine Eagle.

Last year, DENR XI Regional Executive Director Bagani Fidel Evasco proposed to enlist the Mount Candala Range in the list of protected areas in Davao Region and in the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS).

During its climb last May 2021, Evasco trekked the tough trail of the range which has an elevation of 2,100 meters above sea level, and experienced the beauty of its waterfalls, and other biodiversity features.

DENR XI noted that the range housed several flora species like the endemic pitcher plants, and a mistletoe plant under the genus Amylotheca, which is first found in Mount Hamiguitan Range.

Aside from the Philippine Eagle, the agency also documented fauna in the range including three species of beetles, an endangered Philippine Warty Pig, and frogs. (PIA XI, Michael Uy)
