LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (PIA) -- Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the La Trinidad jail will soon learn how to sew.
Department of Science and Technology Assistant Regional Director for Field Operation Services Angel Maguen, DOST- Benguet Provincial Science and Technology Center Director Sheila Marie Singa-Claver, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology( BJMP)- La Trinidad Warden Norman Palangyos and La Trinidad Mayor Romeo Salda recently signed Memorandum of Agreement for the implementation of a sewing project for the PDLs.
Through the project, production equipment and skills training on sewing will be provided to the BJMP Livelihood coordinators and the PDLs.
Claver said the Municipality of La Trinidad was lined-up for DOST's assistance in 2023 and the identification of PDLs as the target beneficiaries is in coordination with the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist. This project is part of the early engagement strategy of PSTC-Benguet and with the approval of DOST-CAR thru Regional Director Nancy Bantog.
"This project will help the PDLs to be productive. Through the training, they will gain new skills and may serve as their alternative livelihood when they will be released from prison," Maguen said.
Palangyos expressed gratitude for selecting the BJMP particularly the PDLs as beneficiaries of the project.
"Aside from our mandate of safekeeping and development of PDL, it is the fervent dream of the Bureau that when these PDL are released from our care, they will be contributory in the progress of our nation. It is our goal that every day, change is coming into the lives of the PDL. This project is giving us hope that this dream will materialize," he said.
Salda assured to provide the needed support to the project and its beneficiaries to ensure its success. (JDP/RMC- PIA-CAR) (DOST Benguet photos)
