LAOAG CITY (PIA) – The Laoag City Engineering Office is preparing for the second phase of construction of Barangay Balatong Sanitary Landfill which will revolve on the construction of slope protection, fencing, and material recovery facilities.
According to City Engineer Aurelio Agcaoili, they are now prioritizing the construction of the slope protection and riprap on the hill above the landfill to avoid landslides because of the rainy season.
Agcaoili estimates a year to construct the remaining needed structures and facilities in the landfill.
With the recent typhoons, Agcaoili assured that rainwater won’t fill the landfill due to the drainage connected to the leachate pond which will collect the rainwater and other residual fluid from the garbage on the landfill.
Moreover, the City Engineer also assured that they are treating the wastewater collected for a safe evaporation process.

According to Agcaoili, they are implementing a strict monitoring on the garbage trucks that dispose of the waste to make sure that the garbage being dumped in is from Laoag City only.
“For private companies and individuals wanting to dump their waste here, they are required to acquire a pass slip from our office, and before sila mag-discard ng basura nila, kailangang ipa-inspect sa City Engineer’s Office,” he said.
The City Government of Laoag is strengthening their waste segregation campaign to residents because the main landfill only takes residual waste while biodegradable waste gets separated in the second landfill which gets turned into compost. (JCR/AMB/EJFG, PIA Ilocos Norte)
