Price freeze implemented in Oton, San Miguel towns

ILOILO CITY (PIA) – Prices of basic necessities are now placed under control or frozen in Oton and San Miguel towns in the province of Iloilo following the declaration of state of calamity in these areas due to African Swine Fever (ASF).

In a press conference held today, October 28, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – Iloilo OIC Unit Head Dorita Chavez said Oton Mayor Sofronio Fusin has already signed the Automatic Price Control (APC) after meeting the Local Price Coordinating Council on Thursday, October 27.

In San Miguel town, she said the APC was signed by Mayor Marina Luz Gorriceta today.

Under The Price Act of Republic Act 7581, the prices of basic necessities in an area declared under a state of calamity shall be automatically frozen at prevailing prices and a price ceiling may be imposed on any basic necessity or prime commodity considering the impendency, existence, or effects of a calamity.

Oton was placed under state of calamity on October 20, while San Miguel on October 24.

As provided under Sections 6 and 7 of The Price Act, basic necessities are goods vital to the needs of consumers for their sustenance and existence in times 

of any of the cases but not limited to rice, corn, cooking oil; fresh, dried and other marine products; fresh eggs; fresh pork, beef, and poultry meat; fresh milk, fresh vegetables, root crops, sugar, and fresh fruits.

Also, canned fish and other marine products; processed milk; coffee; laundry soap; detergents; candles; bread; salt; potable water in bottles and containers; locally manufactured noodles; firewood;  charcoal; drugs classified as essential by the Department of Health; and household liquefied petroleum gas and kerosene.

Chavez said an APC reference will be sent to said local government units and establishments and DTI will monitor the implementation of this together with other concerned government agencies.  (JBG/laf/PIA6-Iloilo)
