Capiceños ask PBBM for 'floodway' project

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) -- Gov. Fredenil Castro has conveyed the Capiceños' request for a floodway project to some key cabinet officials of Pres. Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr. to ease the flooding problem in the province.

"We hope for a floodway as an immediate solution to the flooding problem in the province and the realization of the Panay River Basin Integrated Development Project as a long shot solution to the problem," Castro stressed during a briefing with Malacañang officials on the effects of Severe Tropical Storm Paeng, Nov. 2, at the Roxas City Airport.

The cabinet officials sent by the President to Roxas City to assess the damages and help STS Paeng affected families were Department of the Interior and Local Government Sec. Benjamin Abalos, Jr., Department of Public Works and Highways Sec. Manuel Bonoan, Department of National Defense Sec. Jose Faustino, Jr., Department of Social Welfare and Development Undersecretary Alan Tanjusay and Office of Civil Defense administrator Raymundo Ferrer.

The plan and project design for the multi-year funded high impact project can be accessed at the DPWH Regional Office 6.

The province has, so far for this year, experienced two massive flooding incidents --  Tropical Depression Agaton in April and STS Paeng-induced rains late October.

The TD Agaton's deluge of floodwaters has affected 365 of the 473 barangays in the province with floodwaters and sent 52,392 families or 215,890 individuals to the evacuation centers as well as safer grounds amid the Holy Week celebration.

Based on the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office data, STS Paeng has affected 270 barangays.

The flooding problem, based on media interviews, is caused by the narrowed and silted waterways and denuded forest covers in the province. (JBG/AAL/PIA Capiz)
