DA 6 turns over bokashi production facility in Capiz town

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) 6 handed in the newly-installed bokashi production facility to its beneficiaries in Pontevedra, Capiz.

The P1,380,041.67-worth facility aims to increase the efficiency of farm operations, reduce postharvest losses, increase cropping intensity, and improve farm productivity and income in the locality.

Bokashi is a bio-organic fertilizer made of mud press, chicken dung, carbonized rice hull, indigenous microorganisms, tiki-tiki, lime powder, molasses, and coconut wine, a press release from DA 6 said.

The recipients of the project are farmers’ associations (FAs), particularly, the members of BINUJUSAN Federations of Farmers Associations (FA) composed of Binuntucan FA, Jolongasog FA, and San Pedro FA in town.

The farmers’ federation has been producing and selling bokashi fertilizer to a major mall in Roxas City and to farmers from other DA’s Adaptation and Mitigation Initiative in Agriculture (AMIA) villages.

According to DA Local Operations and

Management Section chief and AMIA project leader Carmelita Fantilanan, the facility will enable farmers to produce their organic fertilizer to increase their crop production despite the increasing costs of chemical fertilizers.

Meanwhile, Guillermo Alvares, chairperson of Jolongajog FA, shared the benefits they could get with the construction of the bokashi facility.

“This facility is a big help particularly in terms of transportation. It is much closer so regardless of the weather, we can do our work and we can secure our products here,” noted Alvares.

The facility was funded under the DA’s Balik Probinsya, Bagong Pag-asa (BP2) Program 2021 Continuing Funds. (JBG/AGP/PIA 6)
