SAN FERNANDO CITY (PIA) – The Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) dominated the regional championship of the 26th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) staged by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-Region 1 held in this city on November 14.
The three representatives from the MMSU filled the top three spots during the regional search for the country’s young statistics wizzes as they showcased their knowledge on the field of statistics over the three rounds of the competition.
Lor Reine Vega, who obtained a total score of 26, bagged the gold, while Cesar Respicio Jr. with the score of 25 ranked second, and Charlie Quetella, who got 20, placed third.
Winners were given medals, trophies, and certificates, while both contestants and their coaches received corresponding cash prizes.
The champion took home cash prize amounting to P15,000 while her coach got P3,000; P5,000 for the second placer and his coach received P2,000; and P3,000 for the third placer and his coach received P1,000.
As the overall regional winner, Vega will represent the Ilocos Region during the national championship to be held in Metro Manila on December 6, 2022.
Lawyer Sheila De Guzman, PSA regional director, said the contest aims not only to assess the students’ knowledge on statistics, but also to raise the awareness of the public on the said field.
“We want to instill to the public the value of statistics, especially among the youth,” she said.

De Guzman also thanked the members of the PSQ Steering Committee, along with the sponsors from the private sector and the Philippine Statistical Association Inc. Ilocos Chapter, which greatly contributed to the successful conduct of the activity.
This is the first face-to-face PSQ staged since the pandemic.
The board of judges were composed of representatives from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Department of Science and Technology, and the Department of Education. (JCR/AMB/CGRC, PIA Region 1)
