DOH 6, partners offer memorial for road crash victims

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Health (DOH) in Western Visayas, along with various partner agencies, local government units, and stakeholders, commemorated the “World Day of Remembrance of Road Traffic Victims.”

This annual global event was formally launched in 2005 when the United Nations (UN) endorsed it as a global day to be observed every third Sunday of November each year.

Since then, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Road Safety Collaboration encourage “all road safety stakeholders to commemorate the World Day of Remembrance to pay homage to those who have died on the world’s roads, advocate for better support for victims, and bereaved families, and promote action to save lives.”

In the region, the undertaking was facilitated by DOH 6 during the recent Multisectoral Alliance Meeting, November 21, held at Punta Villa Inland Resort in Arevalo, Iloilo City led by Local Health Systems Development (LHSD) OIC chief Dr. May Ann Sta. Lucia.

Together with the representatives from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), Land Transportation Office (LTO), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), and Iloilo City Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO), they led the lighting of candles and offered a prayer for all the victims of road crash and their bereaved families.

“We remember the victims of the road crash, and today, we continue to remember them and their bereaved families. May every form of support be upon them. We pray for each and everyone today that we will always be safe from road crashes,” said Sta. Lucia in a prayer.

This year, the theme “Remember. Support. Act.” puts the spotlight on justice. This focuses on the integral role of the justice system in traffic law enforcement, thorough investigation after a crash to find out if a crime was committed and to prevent a recurrence, criminal prosecution where appropriate, and civil compensation.

Based on the World Health Organization (WHO) Global status report on road safety in December 2018, the number of annual road traffic deaths has reached 1.35 million making this now the leading killer of people aged 5-29 years.

With this global campaign, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50 percent of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. (JBG/FRG/PIA6)
