DOH6 reboots RIACEH for better environmental health safety

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- Led by the Department of Health- Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) 6, the Regional Interagency Committee on Environmental Health (RIACEH) was reactivated on Nov. 29.

The RIACEH was created to better protect the health of the people from the growing health problems related to environmental degradation.

DOH-CHD 6 medical technologist Dennar Jun A. Romey explained the origin and functions of RIACEH during the virtual meeting.

As stated in the implementing guidelines of the organization dated March 15, 1995 and amended on July 19, 2007, RIACEH covers the coordination, monitoring, and evaluation of environmental health programs and development projects in the region.

He also cited that the committee is designated to undertake information dissemination and education campaigns on environmental health programs, carry out relevant researches and studies, including the conduct of laboratory analysis, to guide the decision-making and program planning of the board.

The RIACEH is also mandated to declare bans on food unsafe for human consumption and lift the same, as characterized in the present cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) in some towns in Iloilo.

It has also a role to oversee the implementation of national policies, guidelines, and programs relative to environmental health protection at the regional level and disseminate public information and issue advisories on environmental hazard.

To note, the DOH 6, as chair of RIACEH, released a public advisory for Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE) precautionary measures in Western Visayas on September 15, 2022 to mitigate the spread of the environmental health hazard.

Likewise, a tentative schedule of the quarterly meetings for 2023 was presented among the other members as part of the committee reactivation efforts. (JBG/AGP/PIA6)
