Bad weather on Christmas day leaves 1 dead, and 1,054 families affected in ZamPen

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Dec 27 (PIA) -- The Office of Civil Defense (OCD)-IX has reported one death, one injury, and a total of 1,054 families in Zamboanga Peninsula affected by the continuous rain and wind caused by the Shear Line, this Christmas weekend.

Zamboanga City was heavily affected with 12 barangays flooded and 3 barangays reported to have landslides. 102 houses made of light materials were totally damaged. A total of 1,016 families with 5,080 individuals are affected and are staying in evacuation centers.

One 14-year-old girl from Brgy. Guisao was reportedly injured according to the Zamboanga City Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office (ZCDRRMO) while a certain Conception Baylon Carpio, of Brgy. Mercedes was found dead from drowning. She was first reported missing but her body was later recovered at Brgy. Zambowood.

The ZCDRRMO has deployed 3 Search and Rescue (SAR) and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) teams to the affected areas along with the teams from the Bureau of Fire Protection, 74th Infantry Battalion, Philippine Coast Guard, Quick Response System, and Zamboanga City Police Office Sub-stations.

The teams are continuously monitoring the evacuation sites and conducting assessments on the affected barangays while providing security on evacuation sites and providing water services and relief goods to the affected barangays.

Meanwhile, in Zamboanga del Norte, nine (9) barangays are flooded with 38 families consisting of 138 individuals were reportedly affected.

The Provincial Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office (PDRRMO) in Zamboanga del Norte has already conducted Rapid Damage and Needs Analysis (RDANA) and activated Search & Rescue Teams, Clearing Operation Teams, and Transportation and Evacuation Teams were on standby for possible deployment. PDRRMO has also advised all flood-prone and landslide-prone areas on high alert.

As of writing, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-IX has distributed an estimated 1,029 Family Food Packs (FFPs) worth at least P562,338.21 to affected families in the Municipality of Polanco and Manuel Roxas, Zamboanga del Norte.

The OCD-IX and the Regional DRRMC are constantly coordinating with the three Provinces of Zamboanga Peninsula and the cities of Zamboanga City, and Isabela City for close monitoring due to the weather disturbance and for any significant updates, as well as disseminating advisories and issues that need immediate action.
