Lawig ES in Ifugao showcases reading intervention strategy

LAMUT, Ifugao(PIA)--The Lawig Elementary School (ES) teachers led by school head Margarette Dulnoan presented and showcased their reading intervention strategies dubbed "Reading Camp: Every Lawigiean Child a Reader" to the team of the Department of Education- Cordillera (DepEd- CAR), Ifugao Schools Division Office (SDO), and Lamut Local Government Unit.

Forty four  learners across grade levels of Lawig ES    identified for the reading intervention   showed their reading capabilities to DepEd CAR Regional Director Estela Leon-Cariño, Ifugao-OIC  Superintendent Soraya Faculo, and Lamut Mayor Victomar Bunnol and other education stakeholders.

Said learners were identified using the Functional Literacy Assessment Tool and Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (PhilIRI) as a reading diagnostic tool.

The reading intervention strategies are part of SDO Ifugao “Project BIDBID”, a local term for read. It  uses appropriate assessment tools in diagnosing the reading skills of learners and utilized assessment results in developing an appropriate intervention that would help improve the literacy skill of all types of learners. This ensures that learners are readers at their grade level and instill in them interest in reading.

SDO Baguio Education Program Supervisor in Filipino Marilyn Api-it appreciated  the reading and numeracy gap strategies of Lawig ES.  She mentioned that all subjects are affected if a learner does not know how to read, hence she emphasized the importance of phonological awareness which starts from sounds to fluency in reading, vocabulary, and comprehension.

“Mas naintidihan ko ‘to nung pumunta kami sa Lawig Elementary School.  Doon nakita namin ung transition from sounds to words, after words then phrases to sentences… then tuloy-tuloy na ‘yun sa fluency, vocabulary then comprehension,” said Api-it.

Mayor Bunnol  said     the activity is an eye-opener for him and gave his full support to the project. He said they will look for book donors to augment the reading materials of the school.  (JDP/FBR-PIA CAR, Ifugao)
