Poverty incidence in Ifugao decreases

LAGAWE, Ifugao (PIA)--Philippine Statistics Authority -Cordillera Chief Statistical Specialist Aldrin Federico Bahit Jr. congratulated the province for its big stride in the Poverty Incidence (PI) for 2021 with 8.1 percent and now belongs to Cluster 5 or the least poor cluster.

Ifugao province recorded significant improvements in PI since 2015 with 42.40% PI belonging to Cluster 3. It was reduced in 2018 to 14.5% PI improving to Cluster 4. Cluster 1 indicates the poorest cluster.

This means that the province has 17,100 poor individuals in 2021 as compared to 30,100 poor individuals in 2018.

Bahit praised  the efforts of the Provincial Planning and Development Office, the provincial and local government units in reducing the PI in Ifugao  from being part of Club 20 or the 20  poorest provinces  in the 1990’s and  making it to the  list  of least poor cluster in 2021.

Poverty incidence refers to individuals in the province belonging to the poor population whose incomes are not sufficient to purchase minimum basic food and non-food needs or are below the poverty threshold.

Bahit  shared the news during the first-ever Provincial Product Accounts (PPA) Data Dissemination Forum on the Economic Performance of the Ifugao Province for the year 2018 to 2021 held at KGI Mountainside Hotel, Poblacion West in this town.

He clarified that the growth of the economy in the province does not have a direct correlation to the PI since they have different indicators. The Gross Domestic Product gives information about the economic health of a particular area.

Both economic health and PI of Ifugao are in good standing.  The PSA- Ifugao shared that the Per Capita Gross Provincial Domestic Product (GPDP) of the province in 2021 is 1.6% higher compared with the P111, 989 recorded in 2020.

Per capita GPDP is the estimated average contribution of each individual to the total GPDP. It is computed by dividing the GPDP by the total population of the province.

Ifugao province ranks third in terms of per capita GPDP among the six provinces and a highly urbanized city in the Cordillera Region.

The top six contributors to the 2021 GPDP growth  are   construction, wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, education, public administration and defense; compulsory social activities, Information and communication, and manufacturing. (JDP/FBR-PIA CAR, Ifugao)
