Antique banks on cultural preservation to boost tourism

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) -- The Provincial Tourism Office (PTO) here expressed confidence on the preservation and promotion of Antique’s culture and history in attracting more tourists this 2023.

In a press release by Mary Catherine Lavega from the Provincial Information Office (PIO), the PTO is leaning toward the promotion of the local culture and history to pull in visitors both from within and outside the country, instead of building new structures and tourist attractions.

Provincial Tourism Officer-designate JC Cadiao Perlas said that the tourism office in the past two years has shifted its course from erecting attractions to preserving and promoting the province's culture and resources to the masses.

Perlas added that the activities and events organized by their office have not only benefited the tourism sector but also the local economy.

The official noted that with more tourists, more livelihood opportunities will be opened for the people.

In 2022, the PTO has successfully implemented a number of events which include the Trade and Tourism Fair in April and the Fiesta Binirayan in December that provided micro-entrepreneurs with the venue to market and sell their locally-made products.

Late last year, Antiqueños also saw what is considered by the PTO as the biggest Binirayan Festival celebration since the start of the pandemic, with the unveiling of the ultra-size statues of the 10 Malay datus in Brgy. Malandog, Hamtic town, the re-enactment of the first Malay settlement, Parada kang mga Balangay (Float Parade), and the opening of lights and fireworks display among others.

Following the launch in September last year of "The Flavors of Antique Await You," a collection of recipes that seeks to secure the culinary tradition of the province, the PTO will next introduce to the public another book titled "Handurawan," a photo collection from Antique's past.

For 2023 and the years ahead, the Provincial Tourism Office seeks to continue with its work in promoting Antique's culture and heritage to establish the province as a destination for tourists in search of new cultural experiences. (AAL/BPS/PIA Antique/Antique PIO)
